Constable Armstrong was killed while carrying out his hazardous duties. On his way home he stopped for refreshments at The Royal Hotel, Dockray to obtain directions and to continue his arduous journey on foot, to the obtaining and executing of a warrant. He later became lost in the dark and instead of keeping to the road during his disorientated route his path took him high up to Wanthwaite Crag. Whilst attempting to retrace his steps he fell resulting in his tragic death.
