PC Mason was off duty when he saw a Securicor van being held up by armed robbers outside Barclays Bank, Bank Court, Hemel Hempstead. As he tackled the robbers, he was shot in the back and killed. PC Mason was posthumously awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal.
