Constable George Snipe was on patrol in Birmingham City Centre when he was called to a drunken disorder in Bridge Street West. He and a colleague arrived at the Star Pub to break up the trouble and arrested a couple of men. As the officers tried to walk away a crowd turned on them. Constable Snipe was hit on the temple with a brick resulting in a fractured skull. He died four hours later.
