Detective Sergeant Raymond Purdy and a colleague attended South Kensington Tube Station to arrest a man, but he broke free as they emerged onto the street. The assailant ran off into a block of flats at 105 Onslow Square and hid behind a pillar in the hall. He was soon spotted and recaptured. The assailant pulled out a gun shooting and fatally wounding DS Purdy.
