Today we remember Detective Constable Stephen Oake, QGM, of the Greater Manchester Police who was murdered on this day in 2003.

During an operation to arrest a terrorist the man attacked and stabbed several officers.

Knowing full well that other officers had already been stabbed and seriously injured D.C Oake made his way into the room where the offender was and fought single handily to control him during which D.C Oake was stabbed repeatedly receiving fatal injuries.

The officer’s heroic and selfless actions ensued the offender did not escape and also prevented other officers from being stabbed.

Stephen was 40 years of age and left a wife and family.

He was posthumously awarded the Queens Gallantry Medal for his bravery.

We were honoured and proud to unveil our memorial to his service, bravery and sacrifice in September 2006.

We recently renovated and refurbished the Balmoral granite stone.

I was a similar age in 2003. I think of the things I’ve been able to do and see since then and it brings these sort of losses into perspective. A rightly remembered and brave officer.

Today we remember Police Constable Ged Walker of Nottinghamshire Police.

On this day in 2003 the officer was on duty when he attempted to arrest a known criminal who was driving a stolen a taxi.

As P.C Walker reached into the stationary car to remove the ignition keys the driver drove off at speed in an effort to escape.

The officer was dragged a hundred yards down the road before the driver rammed the taxi into a concrete bollard.

As a result of the crash Ged suffered fatal head injuries. He was 42 years of age. He left behind his wife and two children.

In September 2005, we unveiled our memorial stone on behalf of the nation in recognition of P.C Walker’s service, bravery and sacrifice.

It stands at the junction of St Alban's Road and Cantrell Road in Bulwell, close to where the incident happened.

In a fitting tribute a dog show is held annually in memory of PC Walker.

Today we remember the service,
heroism and sacrifice of Police Constables Angela Bradley, 24,
Gordon Connolly, 23,
and Colin Morrison, 38

All three officers lost their lives whilst showing incredible bravery during an unsuccessful attempt to save a drowning man off the coast of Blackpool in Lancashire on this day in 1983.

Our thoughts are with the officer’s families, friends and colleagues.

Following this terrible incident it was realised that there was no national Police Roll of Rememberance for those British police officers who had given their lives in the line of duty.

A short time later our sister charity the Police Roll of Honour Trust was created.

The nation’s Police Roll of Remembrance now contains nearly 5000 names and is proudly displayed by us in the U.K’s National Police Memorial in The Mall in London.
