Today we remember Temporary Detective Constable Norman Garnham of the North Yorkshire Police who was murder 47 years ago.

On the night of the 2nd of March 1977 the officer was driving home to Skeeby near Richmond having just completed his afternoon shift when he saw a man hitchhiking. The officer stopped to offer the man a lift.

What the officer didn’t know was that the man was on the run having assaulted two woman early in the evening.

As the officer was opening his car door to let the man into his car the man suddenly ran off. Suspicious of the man’s actions TDC Garnham gave chase and detained him.

Upon realising he was a police officer the man produced a knife and stabbed the officer twice in the chest inflicting fatal injuries.

Norman was only 25 years old.

The attacker fled the scene but was later arrested, convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

We were honoured to unveil our memorial to Norman’s service & sacrifice on behalf of the nation.

The memorial is situated on the courtyard wall of The Green Howards' Museum in Richmond.

Albeit it is more than 4 decades since that terrible night in 1977 we are proud our motto still holds true -

Today we remember Police Constable Stephen Tibble of the Metropolitan Police who was murdered on this date 49 years ago.

On this date in 1975 police officers detained a man who had been seen acting suspiciously in Fairholme Road, Hammersmith, London. Unfortunately the man managed to break free and ran off. The officers gave chase.

P.C Tibble, who was off duty and unarmed, was passing by on his motorbike. When he saw what was happening he joined in the chase to help his colleagues.

Having overtook the suspect the officer dismounted his bike and stopped the man in Charleville Road.

It was at this point that the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the defenceless officer three times in the chest at point blank range.

Stephen was just 21 years old and married.

He had been in the police for only 6 months.

The other officers who had witnessed Stephen being shot, bravely continued to chase the offender however the gunman escaped and later managed to flee the country.

It was soon discovered that the killer was in fact a member of a terrorist cell operating from a house near to where he had been stopped. The house was found to be a bomb making factory.

The terrorist was eventually arrested, tried and found guilty of the Stephen’s murder. The terrorist was sentenced to life imprisonment with a recommendation that he serve a minimum of 30 years behind bars.

Stephen was later posthumously awarded the Queen’s Police Medal for Gallantry.

In July 1992 the Police Memorial Trust were honoured to erected our memorial stone to P.C Tibble’s service, bravery and sacrifice on behalf of the people of the U.K. It was unveiled at the spot where he fell.

This morning we laid our floral tribute at the memorial.

He will never be forgotten.
