Today we remember Sergeant Alan King of the Metropolitan Police.

He was murdered on this day in 1991.

The unarmed officer was on mobile patrol on Higham Hill Road, Walthamstow, London when he stopped a man he suspected of handling stolen goods.

Unbeknown to Sergeant King the man had an extremely violent history and had already killed two people.

The man also held a lifelong hatred of the police.

Without warning the man attacked the officer with a knife repeatedly stabbing him and inflicting fatal injuries.

Alan was aged 41 and left behind his wife and family.

He was posthumously awarded the Queen's Commendation for Brave Conduct in 1995.

The officer’s name is recorded in the United kingdom’s Police Roll of Honour which is on display in The National Police Memorial in The Mall, London.

We erected our memorial to the officer’s service, bravery and sacrifice on the 12th May 1993 at the scene of his death.

Today we remembered Police Constable John Taylor of Staffordshire Police who was killed on this day 36 years ago in 1986.

P.C Taylor had attended a block of high-rise flats to arrest a man who was wanted for burglary.

As he was attempting to arrest the man a violent struggle ensued and the officer was pushed to his death from the 7th floor of the building.

John was only 26 years of age.

We unveiled our memorial to his service and sacrifice in September 1989 at the junction of Kingsway and Glebe Street in Stoke on Trent.

John continues to be well remembered by those who knew him within Staffs police.

I cannot ever imagine the fact that knowing the danger John faced he like his brothers and sisters go forward .....I can't due to a myriad of issues ever offer myself to the thin blue linev but by God I'm thankful for you all. Ordinary humans doing extraordinary deeds ....God bless you all!

I, sadly, remember the day well. A lovely person. RIP John.

Today we remembered P.C Bill Barker of Cumbria Constabulary who was killed on this day in 2009.

Following a prolonged period of rainfall that caused catastrophic flooding in the Workington area Constable Barker had been deployed to Northside Bridge to investigate a report that a vehicle had gone into the river below.

As the officer was searching for the car the bridge collapsed beneath him. The officer was swept away by the fast flowing water and drowned.

Bill was 45 years of age and left behind his wife and their four children.

He was later posthumously awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery.

The Police Memorial Trust were honoured to erect our memorial to Bill’s service and sacrifice on behalf of the nation in Curwen Park in June 2012.
