Today we remember Police Constable Stephen Tibble QPM of the Metropolitan Police who was murdered 45 years ago.

On this day in 1975 police officers had stopped a man who had been seen acting suspiciously in Fairholme Road, Hammersmith. London. The man managed to break free and run off. The officers gave chase

P.C Tibble, who was off duty, was passing by on his motorbike when he saw what was happening. Even though he was off duty he joined in the chase to help his colleagues. Having overtook the suspect the officer dismounted his bike and stopped the man in Charleville Road.

It was at this point that the man pulled out a gun and shot the unarmed defenceless officer three times in the chest at point blank range.

Stephen was just 21 years old, married and had been in the police for only 6 months.

The unarmed officers, who had witnessed Stephen being shot, bravely continued to chase the offender without fear for their own lives. Unfortunately the gunman escaped. He later managed to flee the country.

It was soon discovered the killer was in fact a member of a terrorist cell operating from a house near to where he had been stopped. The house was found to be a bomb making factory.

In June 1976 Stephen was posthumously awarded the Queen’s Police Medal for gallantry.

The terrorist was eventually arrested and tried and for Stephen’s murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a recommended minimum sentence of 30 years.

In July 1992 the Police Memorial Trust were honoured to erected our memorial stone to P.C Tibble’s service, bravery and sacrifice on behalf of the people of the U.K. It was unveiled at the spot where he fell.

He will never be forgotten.

A selfless example of duty in the extreme. Never off duty, always prepared to react and to help. Rest in peace, brave Stephen. My condolences to your family.

Rest in Peace Constable Tibble . Thank you for making the ultimate sacrifice to keep the rest of us safe .

A brave officer who displayed the best traditions of the Metropolitan Police and paid the ultimate sacrifice. R.I.P. Stephen.

30 years not enough, presumably the killer has been enjoying his life free these past 15 years. RIP to a brave officer.

Respect for his selfless bravery.

Total respect for heroic selfless action killed in a war with terrorism it didn't start in 2001 rest easy young man your duty is done.

What an incredibly sad story. I hope his wife and children have had a peaceful life since 💞

Another murder at the hands of the IRA. RiP Steven

RIP to a brave young officer

Seems like yesterday RIP thank you for your dedication to a very difficult job

RIP Stephen. A brave young man. 🙏

Total respect for this brave officer.

I was thinking of Stephen this week. Did not know him but I had under a year in and used to meet up with a fellow PC at FS. RIP Stephen.

Outstanding bravery and a cowardly contemptuous murderer, I recall this incident. A sad day. Duty..!

A true hero who sacrificed his life upholding the values of the police service and saved many more potential victims lives.

Respect and thanks to this officer for his bravery, thank you. Condolences to his family, never forgotten x

So brave and paid the ultimate sacrifice in doing so god bless you RIP 🙏 😢 ❤

We owe Stephen a huge debt of gratitude.

Every time I read about a police officer being murdered, does not count on how long ago I think that the death penalty should be brought back for murder of a police officer/s,then I think the cowards who carry guns and use them in a crime will think twice about their actions, but there are certain ones who will still do it especially the terrorist faction who kill for the sake of it RIP to all the police officers who have been murdered either on duty or off doing their job 😡😡😡

Rest In Peace PC Tibble. I still remember this happening. My Father was in The Met at the time, it certainly affected the entire force. Thank you for your bravery in your short police career. 💙🙏

Sadly the offender, a US citizen, only served 11 years of his 30 year sentence before release after the Good Friday agreement.

Respect, GBNF

I used to go to CTC at Fulham (FF) with Steve. He was newly married and lived in job flats in Orial Road, by Olympia. He used to work for BA or BOAC. at Heathrow before joining the job. Taken at the start of his career. RIP.

RIP PC Tibble QPM.

RIP

Today we remembered Detective Constable John William Fordham who was killed thirty six years ago in 1985.

John was part of a specialist team engaged on a surveillance operation of a man suspected of robbery that had taken place in 1983.

The suspect discovered the unarmed officer and attacked him with a knife, stabbing him ten times. John died two hours later.

He was forty five years of age. He left a wife and three children.

In September 1987 the Police Memorial Trust erected our memorial to the officer on behalf of the nation. It stands on The Green at West Kingsdown, Kent. It is there to honour John’s service, bravery and sacrifice.

Rest in Peace Constable Fordham . Your bravery snd sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace Sir. You sacrificed your life in persuit of justice. xx

I remember this terrible murder. Rest in peace John Fordham 🙏

Once again, a terrible waste of life, so dreadful for family.

Nowadays the wrong individuals appear to be "worshipped/respected" and put on a pedestal : they're certainly not the ones who apply themselves in their chosen profession where safekeeping of neighbourhoods, communities and nation as a whole is a priority - #policefamily #respect #protectandserve!.

RIP OFFICER 💛💙💛💙

He paid the ultimate sacrifice and his country owes him a huge debt of gratitude.Rest In Peace and thank you for your service.
