PC Carlton was one of several officers who responded to a call to catch two men who held up the Tile Hill branch of the Midland Bank. He followed the robbers car into Torrington Avenue. A shot was fired at him, causing him to crash into a bollard on the pavement. His vehicle became lodged and as he tried to reverse, the man fired again at point-blank range. PC Carlton was posthumously awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Brave Conduct in June 1990.
