PC Guthrie was attending an alarm call at a gun shop in Coventry when he was shot dead by an intruder who had intentionally broken in and laid in wait for the police. He was posthumously awarded the Queen’s Police Medal for Gallantry.
Following a problem with the original plaque a new one was commissioned and unveiled on the 21st February 2025.

Memorial – Originally unveiled 22nd July 2022 behind the Sir William Lyons Building at the junction of Gosford Street and Far Gosford Street, Coventry City Centre
