Sergeant Matiu Ratana
Today we unveiled our memorial to Sergeant Matiu Ratana of the Metropolitan Police.
He was shot as he approached a suspect at The Metropolitan Police Custody Centre, Windmill Road, Croydon on the morning of September 25th, 2020.
Sergeant Ratana was born in New Zealand and known to his family, friends and colleagues as Matt. He was passionately involved in rugby union, training and coaching at East Grinstead Rugby Club.
Since his tragic death, a foundation was set up in response with all funds raised supporting the design and delivery of school and community rugby initiatives, both nationally and internationally. The projects directly benefit disadvantaged young people from all backgrounds.
The ceremony was live streamed so that it could be watched around the world, particularly by friends and family in New Zealand and Australia.
