**UPDATE 05-03-2019** – PC Keith Palmer’s Memorial was unveiled on February 20th 2019 – Please CLICK HERE for more details.
The Police Memorial Trust can now confirm publicly for the first time that we are to place the Nation’s memorial to P.C Keith Palmer, GM, at the Palace of Westminster later this year.
Shortly after the terrible events of the 22nd of March 2017 the PMT met with P.C Palmer’s family to discuss our planed tribute. They have been consulted throughout the planing process and are fully supportive of the project.
Since that initial meeting we have been quietly engaged in the long and complex period of consultations to obtain the special permissions needed to place the memorial to the officer’s sacrifice at the iconic world heritage site.
With the invaluable help of Parliament, Westminster City Council and the Metropolitan Police Service the Police Memorial Trust can announce that we have now secured all the permissions.
We will unveil the specially commissioned memorial stone at Carriage Gates, Parliament, before the end of the year.
Mrs. Geraldine Winner, Chair of the Police Memorial Trust said:
”I am so very pleased to confirm that this fitting and lasting tribute to P.C Palmer will be placed at this iconic site. We know it will bring some small comfort to his family and loved ones”.
“Forevermore the Memorial will remind Londoners and those who visit this site from around the world of the service, sacrifice and heroism of this brave British police officer”.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick, CBE QPM said:
“The Metropolitan Police has been fully engaged in and supportive of the process for placing a fitting memorial to Keith at the Palace of Westminster. I am delighted that the Police Memorial Trust have confirmed that the memorial stone will be in place before the end of the year.”
Rt Hon John Bercow MP, Speaker of the House of Commons, and Rt Hon. The Lord Fowler, Lord Speaker, said:
“Parliament is proud to support the Police Memorial Trust in placing this memorial to PC Keith Palmer at Carriage Gates. PC Palmer died doing the job he loved – ensuring the safety of Members of both Houses, the staff who work here and members of the public on the estate at the time. We owe him a profound debt of gratitude for his bravery on 22 March 2017, which resulted in him paying the ultimate price. This memorial will serve as a lasting tribute to his dedication and his courage.”
Further details of the unveiling ceremony will be released in due course.
