PC Malcolm Walker
In 2001 Police Constable Malcolm ‘Mac’ Walker of West Midlands Police was killed in Perry Barr, Birmingham.
In 2003 the Police Memorial Trust were honoured to erect their memorial to Mac’s service and sacrifice at the place where he fell in Birchfield Road.
When the Trust were informed by Birmingham City Council that the location of the memorial was going to be regenerated as part of plans for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the Trust started quietly working with the Council and their infrastructure partners to relocate Mac’s memorial in order to facilitate a new walkway to Alexander Stadium.
The stadium will be the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the games.
On 22nd of July their joint efforts came to fruition as the Chair of the Police Memorial Trust, Mrs Geraldine Winner welcomed the officer’s widow, Mrs. Helen Walker, family members, Sir David Thompson, Chief Constable of West Midlands Police, police colleagues and representatives of Birmingham City Council to an event to rededicate the refurbished memorial in its new location just yards from its original position.
At the ceremony Mrs. Winner said:
“The Memorial will now be seen by thousands of visitors and spectators on their way to and from the Games and all future events, at night the Memorial will be bathed in light for all to see”.
